THE Gibraltar Alzheimer’s & Dementia Society is planning a music concert for World Rocks Against Dementia.
Daphne Alcantara, the support group’s chairwoman, told the Olive Press they hope to hold two concerts on March 18.
It is hoped the global event will be marked in Gibraltar with an afternoon concert for dementia sufferers, followed by a fundraiser in the evening.
“It is a brilliant idea,” said Daphne.
“It will be the first time we have done this in Gibraltar.
“We want to get the ball rolling with something for those living with dementia and their families and carers in the afternoon.
“We are talking with David Diaz from Gibraltar Live Music Society to hopefully do something in Rock on the Rock in the evening.”
The evening will be an opportunity to raise awareness of dementia, which affects one in six people aged over 80.
“Music has an incredible effect,” said Daphne. “It really triggers something and brings back fond memories for those living with dementia.
“We’ve asked families what types of songs they would like their loved ones to hear. Songs like Delilah and Llevama Donde Naci are really popular.
“We’re also hoping to get a choir in on the day.”
