THE Gibraltar Heritage Trust has hit out at plans to knock down a historic local building.
The demolition of the police guardhouse at Gunwharf was given the green light at a meeting of the MOD Conservation Group on Wednesday.
In December, the Development and Planning Commission had urged the MOD to rethink its plans to knock down the building, believed to date from 1901
A Trust spokesperson said: “The Trust is extremely frustrated at this turn of events as it has been opposing this demolition through the official channels since we first learned of the threat to this building.
“This incident highlights the dire need for the introduction of the new Planning Act and Heritage Act which will bind both the MOD and the Government to planning decisions and enable the listing of buildings.”
The Trust said it had suggested alternative uses for the building, which the MOD dismissed as ‘inappropriate’.
