MARLENE Hassan Nahon has urged the government to ‘examine further options’ following yesterday’s decision to allow patients to access cannabis-based medicine Sativex.
The independent MP’s parliamentary motion to debate doctors being allowed to prescribe cannabis-based medicine was lodged last week and will be debated next week.
But following Thursday’s government decision to clarify the legal status of Sativex, Hassan Nahon called on No.6 to go further.
Hassan Nahon said: “I am now keen to persuade Government to examine further options and make more thorough consideration of the wider medicinal benefits of other cannabis-derived compounds.
“Gibraltar would be mirroring many other countries by adopting this mentality.
“We should exercise our own jurisdictional powers to licence medicines that could benefit local patients.”
Hassan Nahon added that yesterday’s decision ended ‘an unfair system….where access to this medication seemed to depend on the perseverance of individual patients’.
