Gibraltar wins two alpine skiing medals at Special Olympics Winter Games

Samuel Santos and Francis Avellano medal as floorball team beats Uruguary 3-2

GIBRALTAR has bagged its first ever skiing medals in the Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Samuel Santos secured a silver in the intermediate Super G slalom with a time of 1 minute 0.36 seconds, whilst Francis Avellano scooped bronze in the novice event with a time of 31.85 seconds.

Both athletes only started learning how to ski a few months ago.

Earlier, Gibraltar’s Special Olympics floorball team  scored an impressive 3-2 victory against Uruguay.

The team lost earlier games, including a clash with world champions Sweden, and were declared winners when Cyprus failed to show up.

They lost narrowly to Norway in the final game of divisioning and 8-4 to Cyprus.

Gibraltar’s two alpine skiers hit the slopes on Friday for their initial assessments before competing in the Super G slalom on Saturday.

Samuel Santos scored a personal best time of just over one minute, whilst teammate Francis Avellano knocked 10 seconds off his Friday time in the divisioning on Saturday.

Daniela Vinet scored 25 seconds in the 25m snow-shoe event while in the 100m race Nicholas Danino scored 18.8 seconds, just ahead of Gino Francis at 24.7 seconds.
