DESTROYED: The family home is unrecognisable after the fires

THE sister of a Gibraltarian single mum whose house was ruined by two fires is seeking help from the community.

Cheryl Cumba has started a YouCaring page for Najade Cardoso, who has lost everything after not one but two fires tore through her house in St John’s Court.

On Wednesday March 22, 33-year-old Najade received a call from a neighbour who told her her house was on fire.

She rushed home to see smoke and flames coming from the house.

After the firemen left, she managed to salvage some of her 15-year old son’s school work and clothes before yet another fire broke out.

“I had to take a couple of weeks off because it has affected me so much. It has been devastating – I tried not to have a mental breakdown,” she told the Olive Press.

The fire is thought to have started due to an electrical fault, and Najade, who is a part-time cleaner at the hospital, will have to buy new furniture and amenities.

She is staying at the intercontinental hotel with her son while essential repairs are carried out. These only include walls, windows, doors and floors.

“Truthfully I don’t want to go back to the house because I’ve lost everything. My son grew up there, so photos, his baby teeth, everything is gone.”

Her son, Jeyron, is studying for his GCSEs and is already under a lot of pressure, said Najade.

“But he manages. He is my rock, the man in my life.”
