THERESA May has announced a snap ‘Brexit’ general election to be held on June 8.

The British Prime Minister made the shock announcement on Tuesday having earlier promised there would be no early general election.

May said she needed to hold an election because other parties are opposed to the government’s Brexit plans.

May said: “The country is coming together but Westminster is not.

“I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election.”

She now has to win a two-thirds majority in a House of Commons vote on Wednesday to seal the election.

The FTSE market slumped to its lowest level in seven weeks on the news.
