MISSED: Perez (centre)

ONE of the Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party’s ‘most important members’ Juan Carlos Perez has died suddenly.

The cause of the 61-year-old journalist and trade unionist has not been given, but it has come as a shock to the community.

“The whole of the GSLP family is heartbroken,” said current GSLP leader Fabian Picardo. “This is a huge loss to us all. Juan Carlos was the best of us. A friend to all of us.”

He explained that Perez was ‘a friend and mentor’ to him, and the person who had ‘nurtured’ him most within the party.

GSLP chairman Joseph Baldachino described the sad news as an ‘unimaginable loss’.

Perez joined Gibraltar’s Transport and General Workers Union aged 14. He entered into politics in 1984, and was part of the GSLP administration between the years of 1988 – 1996.

Before his untimely death, he was editor of The New People newspaper. He has been praised for ‘devoting his life to defending the working class.’
