It will contribute towards an effort to minimise the amount of plastic debris making its way into the sea.

Greenpeace UK oceans campaigner Louisa Casson praised the move by the UK which has prompted Gibraltar to follow suit.

“This is great news for our environment and a positive sign of Britain’s global leadership on ocean plastics.

“It’s crucial that ministers have left the door open to broadening the ban in future.”
