FOUR exciting cycling events will be held on the Rock this year according to the Gibraltar Cycling Association (GCA).
The events are designed to provide Gibraltarian cyclists with opportunities to compete ahead of the Commonwealth Games in April.
They will also provide practice runs for cycling competitions held as part of the Island Games which Gibraltar will host in 2019.
“The state of cycling in Gibraltar is very healthy but in many ways there is leeway for expansion,” Warren Muscat from the GCA told the Gibraltar Olive Press.
“To start with, a lot of people commute by bike every day from across the border or commute to school by bicycle and we want to encourage all Gibraltarians to follow their examples.”
An Upper Rock race is being planned for early 2018 and a time trial event in Spring as well as the annual International Cycling Criterium and a 90km ‘Rock road race’ for later in the year.
Warren confirmed that the GCA is looking to expand its remit this year to include more Gibraltarian cycling clubs and societies in its plans and to develop a system which better supports young cyclists.
“At the moment there is only one club affiliated with the Gibraltar Cycling Association but we already have five teams who want to affiliate to the GCA.
“We are also busy working on setting up a cycling academy for kids and promoting a women’s national team and a Junior team.
“There are endless international competitions that we have missed out on because we haven’t had the proper structure and cyclists to field teams.
“We want this to change in 2018.”
