A BRITISH TV show favourite will be jetting to Gibraltar this month to give a talk on the history of Chinese art.
Lars Tharp, presenter on popular TV Show Antiques Road Show, will deliver a lecture entitled ‘The Gate of Heroes: On the China trail’.
The event has been put on by The Arts Society Gibraltar as their first ‘Art Society Talk’ of 2018.
“Nearly all the Chinese ceramics on display in European museums, stately homes, palaces and personal collections are survivors of an epic journey and of monumental human labour,” said a spokesman from The Arts Society.
“Each year in the 1600s and 1700s millions of pieces were portered over the mountain border into Guangdong province, passing through the aptly-named ‘Gate of Heroes’.
“Lars will take us on the same journey and, knowing the great human labour involved, you will never again look at a piece of Chinese porcelain without this journey coming to mind.”
Danish-born Tharp has been one of the longest running experts on the Antiques Road Show, first appearing back in 1986.
The show will held at Elliot O’Callaghan’s Hotel on January 17 with doors opening at 6:30pm.
