FLAGS in Gibraltar were hung at half-mast after one of its most-loved politicians, Aurelio Montegriffo, passed away aged 97.

Montegriffo, who was a member of the Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights (AACR) party, was a former Minister of Health and Deputy Chief Minister to Sir Joshua Hassan.

Montegriffo said the development of the Health Centre on the Rock was one of his proudest achievements.

“We are truly saddened by the news of the death of Aurelio Montegriffo,” a government spokesman said.

“He was a very valued person in the community and had been a former member of the House of Assembly.

“Widely known as Gibraltar’s first Minister of Health, the Rock owes him a great debt of gratitude.”

Montegriffo received a CBE in 1980 and then the Gibraltar Medallion of Honour in 2012 for his services to the Rock and its healthcare system.

He is survived by his six children, five sons and a daughter.
